This is one of those films that are filled with beautiful ideas and moments of brilliance and yet do not add up to anything memorable or coherent. While always beautifully shot, everything else about the film is hit and miss. Dialogue, scenes, plot turns are alternately sharp and poignant, and awkwardly flat and wastefully absurd (there's good absurd, satirical absurd, comedic absurd, provocative absurd, zen absurd, and then there is the plain old "WTF", unfortunately, the film is rather well seasoned with the latter). I find Sean Penn and Frances McDormand immensely watchable in their roles, which is such a shame because they given so little to work with. Nevertheless, it's worth seeing, if only once.
