Z Nation is a zombie-apocalyptic show with a lot of heart. It’s first and foremost, a show about zombies. And then, it sets itself apart from the rest of the zombie shows:
It’s horror and comedy combined, it’s whacky and campy at the same time, it gives free rein to the imagination and never holds back. It’s B-movie style, it’s cult-status certifiable.
There’re big and little surprises scattered throughout its gory and glorious 5-season run. There’re homages and Easter eggs of various sorts: Edgar Allan Poe, Mad Max, George R.R. Martin, Back to the Future, the U.F.O., Donald Trump, Saw, Fallout, just to name a few.
And each main character grows on you in their own unique ways. Yes, every main character is one of a kind and larger than life, and they each represents a different genre or generation. And watching them interact with one another is pure delight.
However, a show as amazing as this also suffers from a series of fatal flaws, which render it less amazing as a result.
For example, the suspension of belief stretches pretty thin from time to time even for a zombie show. And there’re plot holes which are just too glaring to be overlooked, plus some unresolved storylines which leave much frustration.
The pacing is yet another problem, sometimes it’s unnecessarily slow, and sometimes it rushes too fast -- it must have something to do with the struggle in the writing process, which is most obviously expressed in some character deaths, some of them just die so pointlessly that you wonder if they’re dead only because the writers have run out of ideas for how to continue their arcs.
Well, all in all, if you’re a zombie fan, Z Nation is worth your time.
