舞会，他们坐在高台上。爱瑟妮一时兴起，站在高台上跳舞。哈里害怕，请她快下来，她兴致正高，不肯听话。杰克愿陪她跳。哈里无法，只得也站上高台。这一幕便是三人性格的缩影，也是后面整个沉重故事轻松的演习。
军令传达，哈里，杰克一众好友，都将开赴苏丹战场。人们都很兴奋，只有哈里退缩。他说，我很害怕。他说，你可想过一旦身陷战场……你不怕回不来吗？这个哈里好像只是怕死，怕离开刚刚订婚的爱人，虽然他说遥远的沙漠与女王有什么关系，说我从来就不想从军那都是父亲的意思，听上去也太像借口。他好像真的是一个懦夫。
于是接下来当他自己去苏丹，几乎死在沙漠里，又混在当地人中间给英军搬行李，真有些不太理解。因此当他说有很多原因，主要是他害怕，阿布法玛笑了。但他说，那是不一样的恐惧。
直到当他为了营救朋友身陷战俘营，几乎无法支撑下去，递给他一瓶毒药，他说，i have nothing left to lose, i have nothing left to live for, 但我还是恐惧。而阿布法玛说，恐惧永远不会消失。
哈里怕什么？不是死亡，不是身体的疼痛，也不是外人的看法。他怕的，或许只是朋友和爱人给他的四根羽毛。为了让他们收回这四根羽毛，哈里愿意付出一切。
