This is a French film about story among three people mainly:
Lolita, a French girl, not pretty but fat, lacks self-confident nor self-esteem, sees herself as someone mediocre, just wishes his dad would see her in his eyes.
Etienne, Lolita’s dad, a famous writer, has a young and pretty new wife, egoistic and arrogant, sees himself as the best, neglects his daughter and people around him.
Sylvia, teacher of chant of Lolita, thought Lolita was just a normal girl until she knew Lolita was daughter of Etienne who was the writer she admired and who could help career of her writer husband. She then tried to approach Lolita and gave her some encouragement.
After Sylvia knew about Lolita was daughter of Etienne and was trying to approach her, the three characters were brought closely together. From that time on, Lolita started to gain some confidence and realized there’s something she’s good at- singing, the scene while Lolita was singing in the church really moved all audience, it was a beautiful scene with beautiful singing.
It’s a film absolutely human and realistic, tries to inspire you to think about yourself and people around you, your own attitude towards yourself and towards the others. Some people just see themselves, believe that they’re over the others and only see the weakness of others, like Etienne. Some people think they’re zero in this world, never a cool guy, they see the strength of others, wish others to value them but feel they are neglected, like Lolita. How about you? You look at the others as human beings like you or as an object only?
It seems everyone always wants others to value them and people tend to wish the ones who neglect them to care about them. In the last scene, when Lolita knew her good friend, Sebastian, has indeed turned down the job offered by her father, she understood Sebastian was the only one who treated her well and loved her unconditionally. So why don’t you love yourself and love the one who loves you back instead of asking for love and care of someone who doesn’t value you much. This film really worths the best script in Festival de Cannes.
