The movie interpretation of the story of Noah is the same as the interpretation of the Bible. However, the movie added multiple details that weren't mentioned in the Bible. For example, the Watchers, their journey to meet Methuselah, etc. I remember we mentioned in class that there are gaps in Bible that we need to use our interpretation to fulfill. I think the movie has done a great job at this. Its interpretation is not the only way to fulfill the Bible, but it makes sense and helps me to understand the story better. In the beginning, the existence of the watchers also confused me. I thought they are just an element that the director decided to add to enrich the movie. After reading Genesis 6:1-4, I wonder if the origin of the watcher is the Nephilim, the son of God. In the Bible, there was no mention of how did Noah receive God’s commandments, the movie interpreted as that God showed Noah what will happen in his dream and suggested what he should do. There are also interpretations that confused me. In the Bible, God let Noah bring his whole household on the arc. I thought it meant that God allows the humankind to live. Since there was no direct command from the God in the movie, Noah thought God wanted to destroy all mankind because they all have sin, even everyone in his household has sinned. This controversy led me to a great confusion throughout the movie. Is it just a different interpretation of the Bible or different understanding of the fact that presented in the Bible. I didn’t understand the purpose of the movie’s interpretation. However, in the end, Ila told Noah that God authorized him to decide whether they are worth save or not. To me, Ila’s words mean, God points out the direction that we should follow but also give us a choice to make the decision, we need to make the right decision that would lead us to serve God and complete God's goal better.
Before watching this movie, my interpretation of the story was very straight forward. It seems to me that God has paved the way for us to follow, all we need to do is to follow. However, the movie has changed my understanding. Just like the covenant, there is work that should be complete from both sides. God directs us to the bright future, but human is the ones that make the decision to walk to the future that God has pointed for us.
