I just finished the first episode no more than five minutes ago. Before watching it, I regarded it as a time killer. I get used to watching soap operas while having meals. And it is not an exception, either. However, the first episode brought me an unexpected ending. It is difficult to define the relationship between Guzman and the heroine. They are not in a relationship. They can't become partners due to their distinctive backgrounds. She is an independent modern woman with a doctoral degree. He is a doorman. He is one of the numerous working-class men in New York. They come from completely different social status, which can remain unchanged in the following decades. However, Guzman knows what she wants. He is also the first one who gives her suggestions in some of her turning points. He helps her survive the most difficult time of her pregnancy. He impresses her with his carefulness and consideration. But he succumbs to the reality, silencing his love in all his favours. He tells a lie in the end. If she is happy with this man, then he will be happy.
I do not intend to romanticize the relations between Guzman and the heroine. Sometimes, a fixed relationship is not important at all. Love and carefulness can happen at any time without the label of the boyfriend. The playwriter fictionalizes some stories. I am curious about the differences between original stories and the revised editions. But I think the best thing which the playwriter has done is to clarify the distance between them.
