Sound was not supplemental to the art of cinema; rather, it added a whole new system of sensual clues to an art form that provided clues by means of visual literacy that later became meaningful in the brains of the audience who was familiar with the viewing experience as a jingle puzzle instead of a "truthful" imitation of life itself.
