There are multiple layers of symbolism associated with the binoculars. The binoculars in the movie is a viewing device that not only served to reveal the physical mysteries in nature, but also exposed the abstract and complicated social interaction among people living on the island.

Suzie’s usage of binoculars establishes a sense of exploration in the Moonrise Kingdom, and it also served as the last living straw for Suzie. In the beginning, audiences are able to acknowledge the basic landscape arrangements on the island through Suzie’s binocular views: The lighthouse on the edge of the coast, the arrangement of the garden beyond the window edge she is looking out to, the interior decoration inside of her house… She explains that the reason that she uses binoculars is that she hopes this would help her to see everything closer, even though some scenes may happen just in front of her. Under the premise that she has depression and is mentally excluded by her families and classmates, I consider binocular as a protection for her to extract herself from the dull, deceptive, and miserable world she suffers in. Everything that Suzie sees in the binoculars is in a fantasized world full of love (i.e she encountering Sam in the meadow), truth (i.e Her mother having an affair with Captain Sharp), and faith (i.e she believes she has the superpower to discover new things with binocular). The possession of binoculars gives her the confidence to live bravely and also think objectively.

The frequency of binocular usage is another evidence to support my previous argument. Before Suzie meets Sam in the meadow. She wears the binocular on her neck all the time. However, as soon as she starts the voyage with Sam to the lagoon, the frequency of binocular decreases to the minimum. The reoccurring shot of binoculars is when they decided to leave the island that she realizes her binoculars are lost in the church. The possible explanation is that the time and place that she spends with Sam does not require her to explore the beauty of life through the lens; Instead, every moment is cherished and true. Only when they have to leave this island, Suzie starts to realize she is going to return to the world full of deception, desires, doctrinal and indifferent world. This fantasized world not only provides her with confidence to explore the world and reveal the secrets that she observes but also provides the mental protection that the real world does not guarantee for her.
